Ruhani or Broken Leaf — Which One Is for You?

This is the question we hear most often at Lucky Tea Depot, and it deserves an honest answer.

Both Ruhani Chai and Lakhi's Broken Leaf come from the same high-grown Assam estates. Both are 100% pure tea — no added flavours, no artificial ingredients, same premium quality, same price. The difference is entirely in the grade of the leaf.

Lakhi's Broken Leaf is BOP grade — larger, bolder pieces of the leaf. More of the natural oils and juices of the tea leaf are retained, giving a richer, deeper flavour and a darker amber cup. It takes a little longer to brew — 4 to 5 minutes to fully release — but the depth it delivers is unmatched.

Ruhani Chai is BOPSM and BP grade — finer, smaller pieces. These release their strength faster — full brew in 2 to 3 minutes. The cup is a beautiful golden colour, the flavour is smooth and clean with good strength, and the character is bright rather than deep. Some customers prefer this because the flavour feels more refined and less heavy on the palate.

A simple guide to help you choose:

Choose Broken Leaf if you like a darker, richer cup and don't mind a longer brew. Choose Ruhani if you prefer a golden cup, quick brew, and a smooth clean flavour with strength.

Many of our regular customers keep both — Ruhani for weekday mornings when time is short, Broken Leaf for weekends when they want the full experience.

The Ruhani Difference

The name Ruhani — meaning spiritual, ethereal — reflects exactly what this tea delivers. It is not the loudest cup. It does not announce itself. It is the chai that settles into your morning quietly, gives you what you need, and leaves no bitterness behind. There is a customer for every kind of chai. Ruhani is for the ones who know exactly what they want.

What Makes This Lakhi's?

Lucky Tea Depot has been sourcing from high-grown Assam estates since 1975. Ruhani is blended to a consistent grade spec — batch after batch, the colour, strength, and character stay the same. Packed fresh, sealed airtight, delivered pan India.

Available in a beautifully presented 200g gift tin — a thoughtful gift for anyone who loves genuine, unadulterated Assam tea.

What is BOPSM grade tea?

BOPSM stands for Broken Orange Pekoe Small Medium — a finer broken-leaf grade than BOP. The smaller leaf pieces brew faster and give a smoother, golden cup with less body than larger broken leaf. Lakhi's Ruhani uses BOPSM and BP grade for a quick, clean, everyday Assam tea.

Ruhani vs Broken Leaf — at a glance

Both come from the same high-grown Assam estates. Broken Leaf is BOP grade — bolder, darker amber, 4–5 minute brew. Ruhani is BOPSM/BP grade — lighter, golden cup, full strength in 2–3 minutes. Choose Broken Leaf for strong milk chai; choose Ruhani for a quicker, smoother everyday cup.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is BOPSM grade tea?
BOPSM means Broken Orange Pekoe Small Medium — a fine broken-leaf grade that brews quickly into a smooth golden cup. It is lighter and faster-brewing than larger BOP broken leaf.
What is the difference between Ruhani Chai and Broken Leaf?
Same estates, different grade. Ruhani (BOPSM/BP) is lighter, golden, and brews in 2–3 minutes. Broken Leaf (BOP) is bolder, darker, and brews in 4–5 minutes. Ruhani suits a quick everyday cup; Broken Leaf suits strong milk chai.
How long should I brew Ruhani Chai for full strength?
2–3 minutes. The small-medium leaf releases full flavour quickly, so it does not need a long simmer.
Can Ruhani Chai be made without milk?
Yes. Its smooth, low-bitterness character makes it a lovely black cup — brew 2 minutes and add a little lemon and honey if you like.
Is Ruhani Chai good for everyday use?
Yes — it is designed as a premium everyday Assam tea: quick to brew, smooth, golden, and consistent cup after cup.
THE ART OF

Brewing the Perfect Cup

Every cup of tea is a journey — from the mist-covered gardens to your teapot. Here's how we recommend you savour it.

01
Choose Your Tea
Select from our range of classic, flavoured, green, or royal infusion teas based on your mood.
02
Heat the Water
Use fresh, filtered water. Black teas love a rolling boil; green teas prefer 80°C.
03
Steep with Patience
Give your tea time to bloom. 2–3 minutes for black tea, 5–7 minutes for herbal infusions.
04
Savour the Moment
Pour, breathe in the aroma, and take that first sip. This is your moment of calm.
